Search Engine Optimisation - SEO

Search engine optimisation, or SEO as it is commonly referred to, is a term used to desribe a method of getting your website to appear when someone uses a search engine to look for your product, service or business. There are 2 main ways of getting your website found - Organic Listing and Pay per Click.

  • Organic Listing
This is the free listing that appears when someone types in a keyword or phrase to find you. If your website has been optimised for the search engine then you have a much greater chance of being found. Ideally you want to appear on page 1 within the first 5 or 6 listings - this is what the average monitor will display without the user having to scroll.
  • Pay per Click
    - These are the paid adverts that usually appear on the right hand side of the search engine page. Some search engines - google for example - also include paid ads at the top of the list often with a yellow background. These ads usually say 'sponsored lnks'. The website ownser pays the search engine company every time someone clicks on the link. The price they pay varies depending on the popularity of the search term.

In the example above someone has searched Google using the phrase 'virtual tours of houses'. Innerview appear at No.1 position in the organic (free) listings. There are 7 companies paying to appear on this page using the paid sponsored links.

It goes without saying that if you can appear on page 1 without the cost per click then it has to help. A recent Jupiter Media study found that 5 out of 6 commercial purchases came from the organic search results versus paid ads. This of course varies depending on the business type and we often recommend a combination of both for a successful online business.

SEO - How do I choose a search engine optimisation company?

Choosing a company to optimise your website is not easy. The costs can very wildly as can the results. Whilst there are good SEO companies there are several less relaible ones that have jumped on search engine optimisation bandwagon.

Some of our clients were being approached by so called 'SEO' specialists who were charging a lot of money for doing very little. This is one of the main reason why we started offering SEO services.

We have proven success in this area and would be happy to provide you with an SEO quotation for your website. We believe our rates to be the best in the marketplace and offer extremely good value for money. Unlike some search engine optimistation companies we do all the work for you and don't simply offer paid advice.

What does Google say about this?

Here is an interesting and useful article on Googles own website about search engine optimistaion and choosing an SEO company to work for you.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Which is the best search engine?

Different people have their own favourites. in the Uk Google is most certainly the most popular accounting for 75% of all searches. Below is an approximate breakdown:

Google - 75%

Yahoo - 10%

LIve (MSN - 10%

The Rest - 5%

As you can see getting well listed in Google should be a priority though the extra business you may pick up from Yahoo and LIve Search is well worth having.

AOL also generate a considerable amount of searches but they use Googles information so a good listing in Google usually means a good listing in AOL.
